About this tool
This tool helps you find the official information about care near you and compare the private quotes you have been given. We publish no local prices or waiting times, and we never estimate them.
You enter your area and the specialty or procedure you need. The tool links you straight to the official waiting-time figures for your area and to the fee information private hospitals must publish under the Competition and Markets Authority rules, through the Private Healthcare Information Network. If you have written quotes from private providers, you can enter each one line by line. The tool lays them side by side so you can see which include the consultant, the anaesthetist, the hospital stay and follow-up care, and which do not. Nothing you type is sent to us or saved.
Where you are
NHS care: Trauma and orthopaedics (hips, knees, backs) in England
Find a hospital
Every NHS hospital, with its address, services and contact details.
My Planned Care
Each trust publishes its own average waits by specialty here, updated monthly, along with what to do while you wait.
Referral to treatment waiting times
The national and trust-level statistics behind those averages, published monthly with the collection date.
Private care: hospitals, consultants and published fees
Private hospitals and consultants in the UK report to an independent body, so you can check a hospital before you ring it. What you will not find anywhere is a reliable national price: prices are local, and the only figure that means anything is a written quote for you.
Find a private hospital
The independent body private hospitals must report to. Search a hospital to see the procedures it does, its published measures and, where the hospital has submitted them, its fees.
Find a private consultant
Consultants practising privately, with their specialties, the hospitals they work at and their published activity. Consultant fees are charged separately from hospital fees.
Private healthcare market investigation
The investigation and order behind private fee and performance publication. Useful if a hospital or consultant will not give you a written price.
Compare the quotes you have been given
Enter the written quotes you already hold. Leave any line blank if the hospital has not quoted it — we report a blank as a question to ask, never as nothing to pay.
Nine questions to ask before you pay a deposit
Ask every hospital the same nine questions and the quotes become comparable. Ask them in writing and you have something to hold the hospital to.
- Is this a fixed price or a guide price?
- A guide price can move once the consultant has seen you. A fixed package price usually cannot, unless what you need changes.
- Does it include the consultant and the anaesthetist?
- At some hospitals those are billed separately, and two otherwise identical quotes can differ by a large amount because of it.
- Does it include the scans and tests before the procedure?
- Pre-admission tests, scans and blood work are sometimes quoted separately from the admission itself.
- How many follow-up appointments are included, and for how long?
- One follow-up versus three months of aftercare is a real difference in what you are buying.
- What happens, and what does it cost, if there is a complication?
- Some package prices cover readmission related to the procedure for a set period. Some do not cover it at all.
- Is physiotherapy or rehabilitation included?
- For joint and spinal work this can be a substantial cost on its own.
- Are implants, lenses, prostheses or drugs included?
- Where you can choose between implant or lens types, the upgrade is often charged on top.
- What is the cancellation and refund position?
- Deposits are common, and the terms for moving or cancelling a date vary widely.
- Will you put all of that in writing before I pay a deposit?
- A written quote is the only version worth comparing. A number given on the phone is not one.
If you are weighing self-pay against waiting or against insurance, the waiting, paying or insuring tool puts the three routes side by side using the same figures.
What this does not tell you
- We hold no price list and no local waiting time. Every figure here is either one you entered or one published by the body named beside it.
- A total on this page covers only the lines you entered. It is not the final cost of your treatment.
- Published waiting figures describe a past period for a whole specialty. They are not a prediction of your wait.
- Nothing here says whether private treatment is right for you medically, or which hospital or consultant to use.
- What you type stays in your own browser. It is not sent to us and it is not saved.
