A lump sum paid to an employee’s family if they die while employed, funded by the employer.
Death-in-service benefits are provided through a group life scheme, usually as a multiple of salary and written under trust so trustees can pay the family at their discretion rather than the money falling into the estate. Cover ends when the employment ends, and there is nothing to take away on leaving. Employees should complete a nomination or expression-of-wish form and update it after any major change at home.
