Which system applies in Wales
Care here is run by NHS Wales through local health boards. The Welsh Government publishes an NHS activity and performance summary each month, and Welsh pathway measures differ from the English ones.

What is different about Wales
- NHS Wales works through local health boards that both plan and provide care.
- The Welsh Government publishes a monthly activity and performance summary rather than English-style RTT tables.
- Cross-border referral into England is common near the border and is arranged through the health board.
- Private hospital capacity is thinner outside the south-east of Wales, so travel matters more.
Choosing where you are treated
In England you have a legal right to choose which hospital you are referred to for most planned care, including many independent providers working for the NHS. [3] The devolved nations run choice differently, and in practice the choice often comes down to how far you are willing to travel. [4]
